Similarly, a government’s power is not necessarily limited to control of its own citizens. Power affects more than personal relationships it shapes larger dynamics like social groups, professional organizations, and governments. Many scholars adopt the definition developed by German sociologist Max Weber, who said that power is the ability to exercise one’s will over others (Weber 1922). Sociologists also examine how the use of power affects local, state, national, and global agendas, which in turn affect people differently based on status, class, and socioeconomic standing. Sociologists, however, tend to be more interested in the influences of governmental power on society and in how social conflicts arise from the distribution of power. They would observe, for example, that the United States’ political system is divided into three distinct branches (legislative, executive, and judicial), and they would explore how public opinion affects political parties, elections, and the political process in general. For the most part, political scientists focus on studying how power is distributed in different types of political systems. It supports up to 140 W power delivery on the 16-inch MacBook Pro with its bundled 140 W GaN power adapter which supports USB-C Power Delivery 3.1. MagSafe 3 is slimmer than its predecessor and connects to a power supply using a removable cable with a USB-C end. On October 18, 2021, Apple announced the M1 Pro and M1 Max 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with MagSafe 3. The resulting shape is incompatible with the older MagSafe connector Apple released a MagSafe to MagSafe 2 adapter that was also bundled with the Thunderbolt Display, which used the original MagSafe connector. MagSafe 2 can be found on the MacBook Pro (2012–2015 Retina models) and MacBook Air (2012–2017) notebook computers. It also returns to the T-shaped design that points straight out, rather than the L-shape that runs along the side of the machine. It was made thinner to fit the thinner laptops, and also wider to preserve magnetic grip force. MagSafe 2 was introduced on the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Retina Display at the 2012 Worldwide Developers Conference on June 11, 2012. MagSafe 2 Close-up of the MagSafe 2 connector It had a DC input (instead of AC like the original MagSafe chargers) and would power the computer, but would not charge the battery. Īpple formerly offered a "MagSafe Airline Adapter" for use on certain compatible airplanes. According to Apple, an adapter with a higher wattage than that originally provided may be used without problems. The MacBook Air used a lower-powered 45 W version. The MacBook and the 13-inch MacBook Pro use a 60 W MagSafe charger, whereas the 15- and 17-inch MacBook Pro use an 85 W version. The Apple LED Cinema Display and Thunderbolt Display include built-in MagSafe chargers. MagSafe can be found on the MacBook (2006–2011), MacBook Pro (2006 through mid-2012, non-Retina) and MacBook Air (2008–2011) notebook computers. LEDs on both the top and bottom of the connector show green if the computer battery is fully charged and amber or red if the battery is charging. Originally the connector was T-shaped, with the cable directed straight out later it became L-shaped, with the cable directed along the side of the computer, but still capable of being inserted in either orientation, unless simultaneous use of neighboring ports such as USB required directing the cable toward the rear. MagSafe has connector pins that are designed so the rectangular connector can be inserted in either orientation. A thinner and wider version, called MagSafe 2, was introduced in 2012. The connector is held in place magnetically so that if it is tugged (for example, by someone tripping over the cable), it will be pulled out of the port without damaging the connector or the port, and without pulling the computer off its surface. MagSafe was introduced on 10 January 2006, in conjunction with the MacBook Pro, the first Intel-based Mac laptop, at the Macworld Expo. When THQ went under, 38 Studios picked the team up. Sometimes Epic’s shifts were so sudden they led to what could only be called bad business decisions.įounded in 2000 by Brian Reynolds, Tim Train, David Inscore and Jason Coleman, THQ acquired Big Huge Games in 2008. Epic was awarded $9 million in a decision that was later upheld by a federal appeals court. In 2014, Silicon Knights lost its case and Epic won a counterclaim alleging breach of agreement, infringement of copyright and misappropriation of trade secrets. In 2007 Too Human developer Silicon Knights sued Epic, accusing the company of using money it earned by selling licenses to their Unreal Engine 3 game engine to fund the development of Gears of War, rather than improve the game engine for other developers. Epic also partnered up with EA, Midway and others during the era that it had success publishing with Microsoft. In its early days, Epic tried its hand as a publisher, putting out games developed by Safari Software, for instance. While the company’s telling of its history neatly matches that philosophy, it does leave out some of Epic’s experiments and failures over its 25 years. Each era has a specific focus, a key partner company and an approach to development. Surviving for this long, says Tim Sweeney, requires change. But this latest era of Epic isn’t the first time the company has evolved. well, everything.Įpic Games has changed - in ways the company believes will mark the emergence of a new sort of game industry. Nearly four years after the move to 4.0, the company is ready to explain how the Epic of Gears of War and Bulletstorm is becoming the Epic of. And then there is everything else, from the company’s work with NASA to its recent deal involving using the engine to design elements of Walt Disney theme parks. There is the company’s push into television and movies, a move powered by that same development engine, which Epic says can now create lifelike models in real time for 3D and virtual reality needs. There is Epic’s now free up-front development engine, which they say is incredibly profitable. There is the necessity of virtual reality, technology that many at Epic say will be an integral part of the company’s future. At least, that’s the plan.īut now there is much more to Epic than just game making. The most recent, still unfurling version of Epic Games now wants to be what Bleszinski calls a "multi-headed hydra of technology."įor gaming, this latest change brings Epic almost full circle, back to a place where it deals directly with the people who play its creations. It’s all led to what Sweeney calls the biggest change in the 25-year-old company’s history: Epic 4.0. Months later, Bleszinski and a slew of other important figures left to retire, to start over, to find better fits. The month before, Tencent purchased 40 percent of the company. 4, 2012, the wedding photo booth captured a quiet, personal moment in the midst of what became a massive metamorphosis for Epic.
